The largest sugar producer in the nation, Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL), collaborates with Illovo Distillers Tanzania Limited (IDTL) and is a part of Illovo Sugar Africa Limited, the largest sugar producer in Africa. The company, which consists of two adjacent agricultural estates and sugar factories, Msolwa and Ruembe, located on either side of the Great Ruaha River and connected by a low-level bridge, is located in the Morogoro region in the country's centre and south.
Approximately 1.25 million metric tonnes of sugar cane are used in the company's annual production of about 130 000 metric tonnes of sugar, of which 45% is grown by our growers, who continue to receive support from the company's extension team, and 55% is grown by our own cane-growing operations. Kilombero's direct-consumption brown sugar, marketed under the brand name "Bwana Sukari," enjoys strong local consumer support as part of the company's successful "route to market" sugar marketing business model. Kilombero, one of Tanzania's four sugar producers, is a net importer of sugar at the country's current production levels of just over 300,000 metric tonnes.
